Experts have found that while you cannot stop your brain’s natural aging process, you can modify your lifestyle to help slow the process. These changes may include things like getting good sleep, participating in regular movement, and eating healthy food.
We spoke with Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN, author First Time Mommy Pregnancy Cookbook And Male Fertility Nutritionand a member of our Medical Expert Council, on eating habits that may actually be aging your brain faster without you even realizing it. Manker says that when it comes to taking care of your brain health, making sure you eat enough natural fruit every day is imperative.
“Fruits like blueberries contain compounds that help support brain health,” Manker says. “In fact, the data show that when the diet was supplemented with blueberries daily for 90 days, people showed fewer errors on tests used to assess verbal memory and task switching than those who did not include a daily dose of blueberries.”

Fish is another essential food for brain health, so Manker suggests including it on a daily basis.
“Experts recommend that most adults eat about 8 ounces of fish per week,” she says. “The meta-analysis found that eating fish regularly was associated with a 20% lower risk of Alzheimer’s-type dementia.”

Before you skip the egg yolk and reach for the egg white, you might want to think twice.
Egg yolk is one of the richest sources cholineIt’s a nutrient that plays a positive role in brain health,” says Manaker, “so skip the egg white omelet and eat the egg yolk. Not only will you get choline, but you’ll also get many other important nutrients, such as lutein and vitamin D. “
Interestingly, walnuts are one of the best foods you can eat for your aging brain.
The data shows that Walnuts may delay cognitive decline in subgroups at higher risk,” says Manaker. Adding walnuts to your daily oatmeal or enjoying them as a snack may help keep your brain health in check. “
