It’s important to note that although foods can help make your body feel better, getting a vaccine and a booster shot in the case of COVID-19 are the best ways to help fight the main symptoms of the virus. Medicines are recommended by doctors and health professionals in case of certain illnesses, and foods are just a plus to help reduce symptoms that make your body feel fatigued.
So what kinds of foods can help boost your immunity and make you feel better when your body is out of the body? Dr. Cedrina Calder, MD, Preventive Medicine and a member of our Medical Expert Council shares four different foods you turn to when you need to boost your immunity during a bout of illness. “Chicken is a good source of vitamin B6, which is essential for healthy immune function,” Calder says.
According to a study in Journal of Immunology ResearchVitamin B6 deficiency has been linked to a weakened immune system, making it an important micronutrient for your health. Lean chicken breast is known as one of the best foods with vitamin B6 with up to 30% of the daily value in just one cup, according to the USDA.
Another added benefit of chicken soup is the warm liquid that soothes a sore throat, which is a major symptom many people experience with the Omicron type of coronavirus.
“Drinking warm liquids like soup can help soothe a sore throat,” Calder says.

A cup of warm soup isn’t the only liquid soothing for a sore throat. A cup of this soothing tea contains quite a few ingredients that can help boost immunity and symptoms.
“Ginger helps reduce inflammation,” Calder says. “Ginger can also relieve nausea that can be a symptom of COVID-19 and other viral diseases.”
Besides reducing inflammation and relieving nausea, ginger is beneficial for digestive function, pain, metabolic syndrome, and other symptoms, according to a review in Nutrients.
Calder also points out adding some honey, which is another easy way to soothe a sore throat.
According to Calder, adding certain foods — such as chili peppers — to the meals you already eat can actually help treat the disease, too.
“The capsaicin in hot peppers like chili peppers can help with congestion when you’re sick,” Calder says. “It can relieve stuffy nose and sinuses.”
Previous studies also demonstrated the ways in which capsaicin can produce anti-inflammatory effects in a previous study of African Health Sciences.
Capsaicin is a chemical compound found in hot peppers such as jalapeños, habaneros, and shito. You can also benefit from this compound by using cayenne pepper in recipes.
Besides cayenne pepper, garlic is another easy addition to your meals and can help boost your immunity.
“Garlic stimulates immune cells and may help fight infection,” Calder says.
Another review in Journal of Immunology Research It was concluded that garlic modulates cytokine secretion – a response from cells in the body that can help with infection and infection, which means that eating garlic can act as an anti-inflammatory and improve your immune system.
You can simply add garlic to your favorite comfort dishes when you’re sick – like a bowl of pasta or soup.
