Is eating warm food during winter healthy? Ayurvedic Expert Answers

We all love to have cold drinks and cold dishes. However, during the winter we need to make sure that we take the utmost care and not eat foods that are too cold.. Taking it to Instagram, Dr. Dixa Bhavsar, an expert in Ayurveda, spoke about the importance of eating warm during winter for breakfast in particular. An excerpt from the caption reads, “Acc to ayurveda, agni (digestive capacity) derives its energy from the sun. The sun is the source of our metabolism. According to Dixa, a warm breakfast is the right way to start the day. She says, “In the morning the sun shines and so does our appetite (digestive fire/appetite). It doesn’t work to its optimum capacity. So in order to prepare our intestines so that we can digest meals throughout the day, a light, warm breakfast (first meal of the day) is a good idea. It is the best because it is light to digest (it doesn’t put too much pressure on your gut) and prepares your gut for optimal digestion. A warm breakfast is very much like a warm-up exercise (for your Agni) we do to prepare our bodies for the real workout (ie digesting lunch) which needs more strength” .

For lunch, Ayurveda suggests eating a heavy lunch between 12 and 2 p.m., because this is the time when the sun is at its zenith in the sky and your digestion capacity is also optimal, Dixa suggests.

On whether cold breakfast is good for the digestive system or not, Dr. Dexa says, “Eating a cold breakfast is a lot like pouring water over a burning fire, causing it to explode rather than helping it burn. Hence, Ayurveda suggests eating a warm breakfast And as light as freshly cooked porridge, stewed fruits (apple/pear), various peppers (pancakes), boiled legumes (mung and chickpeas for people who work out) or just boiled vegetable soup.”

Dr. Dexa says that cold breakfast is ideal for people with high pita. However, for prakriti people, a warm breakfast is best.
