Schnucks offers a service to help shoppers keep track of purchases of healthy foods

In the ad, Schnox said these foods should be free of artificial flavors, sweeteners and colors and can contain no more than relatively low levels of saturated fat, added sugars or sodium. The Good For You menu features more than 5,000 items, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, eggs, and lean meats, according to the grocer.

The software calculates the percentage of products a shopper purchases that meet the criteria and displays that information on their receipt. In addition, participants will receive reports each month on whether they are making progress toward purchasing more healthy foods.

Schnucks directs promotions to shoppers who participate in the program, including fitness-oriented YouTube videos and recipes on his website that use the ingredients in the Good For You list.

Good For You is based on technology from Spoon Guru, a London-based startup that uses machine learning and in-house nutrition experts to help retailers analyze shopping behavior and identify trends. Schnucks worked with Spoon Guru to evaluate all the foods it sells and determine which items qualify for the Good For You label, Alison Primo, the grocery’s director of health and wellness strategy, said in a press release.

Schnucks’ launch of Good For You is part of a growing effort by food retailers to highlight healthier options for shoppers. In another example of this trend, Ohio-based Heinen last year launched a Healthy Membership Program That provides tools including shelf labels, weekly emails focused on nutrition and a training program that includes blood tests.

Last year, Ahold Delhaize Graphics update Used as part of their Guiding Stars program, which uses shelf labels to help customers choose nutritious products when shopping for their signs. Other grocers, including Hy-Vee, Kroger, and Natural Grocers, provide virtual access to nutritionists to help shoppers choose healthy foods.
